Making new piano rolls in the days of online music streaming is less a business and more a labor of love. When you buy a JAZZAPATION PIANO ROLL, you are primarily paying for manufacturing costs and the royalties our musicians make per piano roll sold. That’s because we are committed to charging as low a price as we can without sacrificing quality, as well as continuing to attract outstanding musical talent by compensating them fairly.
HAND-PLAYED PERFECtion
Our hand-played arrangements are all captured on high-end digital pianos or acoustic pianos with built-in MIDI capability. Rather than recording an audio file, MIDI allows us to capture what is, in essence, a virtual piano roll of the artists’ playing. We use Logic Pro X to edit these performances to play correctly on a player piano, while still preserving the overall personality and flair that every artist brings to their performance.
Deep Henderson was recorded during a live concert at the home of Bill Hoffman. You’ll notice quite a difference between the unedited, live take and the edited final product:

You may be inclined to ask, “aren’t you editing out all the subtleties of the hand-played performance?” Absolutely not! The main challenge faced in the editing process is interpreting sustain pedal usage. In many cases, pianists use a technique called “half-pedaling,” in which the sustain pedal is not fully engaged, but rather, only partially engaged. This helps the pianist create subtle legato effects that a pneumatic “loud pedal” on an ordinary 88 note player piano is unable to recreate. The elongated notes you see in the “edited” picture allow us to emulate the pianists intended legato/half-pedaled sound within the parameters of a pneumatic player piano’s function. Most—but not all—of our rolls are snapped to a grid, so that our rolls can be perforated at an economical step-rate and to insure that our rolls will make any player piano in average condition sound as excellent as possible. Our editing process ensures that the artist’s intent shines through on your piano!
THE artists
Adam G. Swanson, “the Pete Wendling of Jazzapation,” is one of the premier interpreters of ragtime and vintage American popular music in the world today. The only four-time winner of the World Championship Old-Time Piano Playing Contest, he has performed in concert venues and festivals all across the USA, Europe, and even Australia. His classical training, masters in musicology, and unbridled love for music of the past combine to give his playing an inimitable, authentic sound.
Vincent Johnson is a leading authority on novelty and syncopated piano stylings. He has combined his knowledge with unparalleled skill to become an award-winning pianist and composer. His original pieces combine the format and parlance of historical rags and piano novelties with his own humor and sensibilities, creating a personal, unique style.
director of operations
Domingo Mancuello (founder, music director, lead editor, and warehouse manager) is quickly building an impressive portfolio as a leading player piano roll producer, editor, and arranger. He has collaborated with Art Reblitz in transcribing Reblitz’s American Roots O-roll arrangements into (multiplexed!) G-roll scale and Glenn Thomas in arranging and orchestrating new Wurlitzer APP rolls. A lover of 1920s music, he has an extensive collection of piano rolls, sheet music, and records. However, he is equally passionate about arranging contemporary pop music for automated musical instruments. Meliora Music Rolls distributes his arrangement of Lady Gaga’s Joanne for AMPICO and WELTE reproducing systems.
He is a union stage manager by trade, having spent nearly five years working in professional regional theatre. In 2012 and 2013, he placed 4th and 3rd place in the World Championship Old-Time Piano Playing Contest. Since then, when not working theatre gigs, he has played ragtime piano in events and festivals from Pennsylvania to Colorado. Pop over to his youtube channel or his soundcloud.
A piano roll collector from the age of 10, he has dreamed of having a piano roll company his whole life. @thedomingo
